FAQ Around New Online Satchels

Where does the collected soft plastics end up?

  • In NZ we work with the Soft Plastics Recycling Scheme. They then use their magic (science) to turn the bags into all kinds of things that are way better than landfill!

Why can’t I put my online satchel in the normal recycling?

  • For most councils, it’s tricky to accept soft plastics for recycling via regular collection. Sadly, they sometimes jam the sorting machines.

How is this online satchel different to previous online satchels?

  • Previously our bags were made from 100% virgin plastic, but this initiative enables us to move to a 100% recycled plastic, which can be recycled via soft-plastic recycling schemes.

Why is Kathmandu moving to this form of online satchel?

  • At Kathmandu we believe that outside makes us happy inside. And given the importance of the outside, we need to look after and care for it. To do this, we are guided by our 2025 Best for the World Goals, and one of these goals is to have “net zero harm from our business”. It’s a big deal.
  • 100% sustainable packaging materials by 2025 is our goal, so we’re always looking for ways to reduce our non-sustainable packaging. We figured we could do online satchels better…and here we are! It’s a continuing journey, and we’re thrilled you’re coming on it with us.
  • As part of being a B-Corp, we’re always on the lookout for new and innovative ways of doing things. To help guide our choices, we’re also a member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) and the Packaging Forum.
